I have been using Shaffer for years but now they are called Shaffer Beacon. I needed some regular maintenance for both AC and heating system. Michael (a very professional young man) came right on time this morning at 8AM, and did a thorough inspection. He was extremely thorough, professional, and also showed me how to order the correct air filter for next time as the current one is a reusable which is not as effective as the good quality disposable ones. I will continue to use Shaffer Beacon for HVAC for my house. Thank you Michael!
TLDR: Tried to charge $1600 to not fix a $30 problem.
My girlfriend's water at her house started to smell like gas after changing her water filter so she had called Beacon to come out and look at it. Unfortunately I wasn't able to be there when they came but after 25min. they had told her that it was her well tank. Now when she had told me this I immediately called and asked how they came to that conclusion. I spoke to Randy over the phone and he said the technician thought it smelled like rubber and there was black specks in the filter so he concluded it was most likely the bladder in the tank that was deteriorating. I told him that it was definitely not a rubber smell and those black specks were most likely iron because the water left rust colored stains. He said he would talk to the technician and get back to me. He never called me back but he did send her a quote to replace the well tank for $1600. I was pretty convinced it was not the tank because I had one go bad on me before and nothing pointed to my girlfriends being bad. I had someone else come out and take a look at the issue and within 30minutes he had found the issue. There seemed to be a defective filter that was installed and caused the water to smell like gas. After we changed the filter the smell went away. The most annoying part is that the second guy we called said it was extremely easy to troubleshoot because there was a faucet in between the filter and the well tank. If you took water from there it was extremely dirty but had no smell at all. That meant the well tank wasn't causing the smell but the water right after the filter smelled. I only recieved a call back from Randy after I sent him detailed email how the people we called second had found the issue. There was no apology, and no offer to refund the outrageous $145 she was charged for the 25minutes spent just to end up telling her she needed to replace the well tank for $1600 when that wouldn't have even fixed the issue. All he said was he was glad we figured out the issue. I'm hoping it was purely a mistake on the technicians part but I did not like the fact that my girlfriend was charged for a full hour of work when he didn't even do a thorough job. I would absolutely never call this company to come out again and I'd advise others to look for someone else. From what I've read, looks like they were bought out or merged with another company and have gone down in quality and up in price ever since.
Unfortunately not great things to share. Problem is not really fixed and he charged us 350$ for trying to fix the error our thermostat was showing. He wasted lots of time to google what to do. The last guy we hired had less than an hour to fix the same issue for 125$. Plus he put some extra cables in that weren’t necessary to fix the issue, charged for it without informing me about the additional cost. He left a mess and walked in our house up and down in shoes without asking if that is okay with us. Giving two stars cause we’ll definitely not hire them again.
Super disappointing experience. After using Shaffer for ongoing tune ups, we felt very taken advantage of. They came to deliver my air filter which historically has been $45 and then told me they got a higher quality filter and were billing me $170. I never consented to a higher quality filter, nor was I informed of the drastic price increase. They said since it was installed, it couldn’t be returned. The best they could do was come down $40. While everyone who handled it was friendly and kind and I know not the decision makers, this experience felt dirty and extremely disappointing. 3 stars only because their service techs and Amanda have been pleasant since working with them. Super shady behavior.
Ive been using Beacon Mechanical since they installed my boiler in 2015. I've always received good service. This past Friday my service was done by Jesse, he was great! He was very through and took the time to explain everything in detail. Would definitely recommend and will be asking for Jesse again next year. Thanks!
I want to thank the Beacon Team, Brent and our technician, Louis, who helped us out when we lost heat on one of the coldest days of the year. The technician came out at midnight and stayed until the job was done. Incredibly impressed with the responsiveness and willingness from your company to help us when no one else would. Thank you!
We had Shaffer Beacon, then just "Beacon", install a ductless mini split (heat/AC) system in the late summer / early fall of 2021. Since we are using it as a supplemental, not primary source of heat for our space, we used it very little until the need for AC in summer of 2022. At that time, when called upon to do the job, the system was completely ineffective. They sent a tech out to look at it, who concluded there was no fluid being pumped through the system. Apparently the installation crew bungled the job (left a loose nut, whatever) to the extent that all of the coolant leaked entirely from the system into our walls. Strike 1. The tech was able to prime the system and get it running again, but re-installed the unit with the louvers on upside-down (besides leaving a rusty/greasy mess of residue all over the unit, which I had to clean myself with bleach), requiring yet another visit to our house to fix. Strike 2. On that visit, a piece of the flimsy plastic louver broke as the tech was reinstalling it, which he assured me would be replaced. Then I was told the part was on backorder. Four months and several follow up calls later, I am still waiting for them to make it right. Strike 3. A wholly disappointing experience with this company, other than the service which was friendly.
Follow up edit: today they finally replaced the broken part - plus one star.
Very nervous replacing my 61 yr old gas boiler and my hot water heater into a combi system. I have an older home and no big job goes without problems!!! Steve, Tyler and Sal came from Shaffer Beacon they were kind, professional, put up with my hundreds of questions and concerns. Most importantly they were competent in their trade!!! Now I have a 95% efficient combi system, instead of a 47% efficient heating and water system! Thank you Shaffer Beacon and thank you Steve, Tyler and Sal !
I want to thank Shaffer Beacon mechanical for their professional and prompt service. We just had our A/C and furnace maintained by one of their service people, Jesse. He was polite and kind and offered a few suggestions to make our system run more efficiently. Thank you for the great service.
We have had a contract with Beacon for many years including at our previous home. Their customer service is top notch and always very responsive. I would also like thank our technician Jesse who is always prompt, quickly resolves our issues, and is absolutely so kind and professional - even doesn't mind our pack of dogs that like to greet and "help" him. Highly recommend this company.
